As careers progress, the definition of leadership changes.Early in our careers, we are often measured by what we know and what we deliver. At senior levels, leadership is increasingly about how we think, how we decide, how we influence, and how we create sustainable business value..

  1. Experience — Learn from the journey
Experience gives us the ability to recognize patterns, understand risks and avoid repeating mistakes. But experience becomes valuable only when we continue to learn from it.
  2. Judgement — Make decisions in ambiguity
Senior leaders rarely have complete information. Good judgement is about balancing data, business context, risk, people and timing to make decisions that move the organization forward.
  3. Leadership — Create ownership, not dependency
Leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about building capable teams, creating accountability, developing people and giving them the confidence to make decisions.
  4. Business Understanding — Think beyond the function
A Finance leader cannot look only at the P&L. A Procurement leader cannot look only at purchase price. An Operations leader cannot look only at productivity.True business

For me, five dimensions come together: leadership connects

Revenue → Margin → Cost → Cash → Customer → People → Growth. Transformation — Build the future, not just manage today

Transformation is about challenging the status quo, simplifying processes, using data and technology better, and creating sustainable improvements in productivity, cost, working capital and customer value. And perhaps the most important lesson is this:

Experience tells you what you have seen.
Judgement tells you what to do.
Leadership gets people to execute.
Business understanding tells you why it matters.
Transformation ensures the improvement lasts

When these come together, a functional leader can gradually become a business leader. The ultimate measure of leadership is therefore not just:“What did I achieve?”It is:“What value did I create, what people did I develop, and what did I transform for the organization?”That is the leadership journey I continue to believe in.
